Bear Sightings Reported In Jeffco Open Space

Rangers released a list of local parks where bear activity was reported.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO — Visitors reported bear sightings in some Jeffco Open Space regions, rangers announced Sunday.

Over the past week, bear activity was reported at Apex, Deer Creek, Windy Saddle, South Valley and Pine Valley Ranch, Jeffco Open Space officials said.

No negative interactions have been reported, but park visitors are asked to keep their dogs on leashes and be "bear aware:"

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • If you see a black bear, stay calm, don't run, and back away slowly
  • If you're attacked, fight back

Deadly bear attacks are rare, but they can occur, wildlife officials said. A 39-year-old woman was killed by a bear near Durango earlier this month while taking her dogs for a walk.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife issued the following guidelines for keeping bears safe:

  • Always keep your barbecues clean
  • Take down any bird feeders
  • Keep garages closed
  • Only put out trash on the morning of pickup

Any bear sightings should be reported to CPW at 303-291-7227, or to police.
