More than 1.2 million Coloradans have received at least their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, according to state data.

Dr. Jon Samet, an epidemiologist and the dean at Colorado’s School of Public Health, joined in a state news conference Tuesday to urge people to continue social distancing and wearing masks. But he said the state has made significant progress toward immunity.

“We have a ways to go,” Samet said. “We’re heading toward more and more Coloradans being immune either because they’ve had the infection or because they’ve been vaccinated. The good news is that 80 percent above 65 have had at least one dose of the vaccine and hospitalizations are dropping in those 70 and older.”

All Coloradans ages 50 and older will become eligible to receive the vaccine beginning Friday.

Every Coloradan is expected to become eligible for vaccination by mid-April, depending on federal supply, Gov. Jared Polis announced Friday.

The state's vaccination data dashboard shows which of Colorado's largest counties have the highest vaccination rates per 100,000 people.

It's harder to analyze counties with low populations, as they've been grouped into regions with more than 100,000 people; however, some metro Denver and nearby counties are showing a considerable difference in vaccination rates per 100,000 people:

*Data as of Sunday

  • Broomfield: 40,102
  • Jefferson County: 39,556
  • Boulder County: 37,101
  • Douglas County: 32,990
  • Denver: 32,776
  • Arapahoe County: 30,086
  • Adams County: 25,606

Outside Denver's metro area, Eagle (45,190) and Summit (42,088) counties had some of the highest vaccination rates in the state.

Some counties have higher rates due to higher populations of people ages 65 and older, and front-line workers. And some eligible Coloradans are choosing to hold off on getting vaccinated.

Colorado's first state community vaccination site opened Wednesday at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. The drive-through site will begin offering 2,000 COVID-19 vaccines each day, and once there is enough supply, the site will offer 6,000 vaccinations each day, Polis said.

The drive-through clinic, at 3185 Venetucci Blvd., will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. People who are eligible to receive the vaccine can register here or by calling 720-263-5737.

The state is set to launch other community vaccination sites in Denver, Mesa, Adams, Pueblo and Larimer counties, public health officials said.
