ARVADA, CO – The announcement came on April 1, and you couldn't help but wonder if it was an April Fool's joke: The long-awaited G-Line is finally opening with service between Denver Arvada and Wheat Ridge on April 26, the Regional Transportation District said Monday.

Scheduled to start running in 2016, the commuter line has been long-anticipated, especially since safety tests with blowing horns have been running on the track since last summer.

The 11-mile commuter rail line will transport passengers from Wheat Ridge to Union Station in 26 minutes. At Union Station, passengers can connect to the C, E and W light rail lines, the University of Colorado A Line to Denver International Airport, the B Line to Westminster, Local and Regional buses, the Free MallRide, and Free MetroRide, RTD said in a statement.

Arvadans have been frustrated by the delays, and began using the nickname "Ghost Train" to describe the empty cars that ran day and night along the tracks. One company even released t-shirts to commemorate the "G-Line to Nowhere." Now all that will change, if RTD can keep the agency on schedule. Fares will be $3.
