Metro Denver, Boulder Winter Weather Advisory: Update

Here's what you can expect throughout the day on Friday.

A Winter Weather Advisory continues for many Colorado regions, and storm alerts have been issued for the high country. The National Weather Service advisory has been issued in metro Denver and Boulder until Friday at midnight.

Many schools are closed Friday, including Denver Public Schools, Jeffco Public Schools, Adams County District 14, Littleton Public Schools and the Douglas County School District.

Slick roadways continue to cause accidents in the region, and weather officials are urging drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the alert read. "The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute."

Between two and five inches of snow is expected to fall throughout the day, weather officials said.

Metro Denver and Boulder residents can expect a "prolonged period of heavy snow and strong winds in the north central mountains [ ...] through Friday night," the alert read. "Narrow bands of moderate to heavy snowfall [are] expected to set up over parts of the I-25 Corridor and adjacent plains."

Total accumulations of up to 30 inches of snow could fall in some mountain regions, particularly the northwest facing slopes, weather officials said.

"Strong gusty alpine winds up to 60 mph will create blowing and drifting snow and low visibilities. Travel will be difficult to impossible. Wind chill temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees below zero are expected," a Hazardous Weather Outlook read. "All the snow and wind will be increasing avalanche danger, be sure to check with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center for the latest forecasts and statements."

"Snowfall is expected to greatly vary across the lower elevations due to the bands of heavy snow. A general 3 to 6 inches of snow are expected, locally higher amounts of 8 to 10 inches will be possible."
