Bolder Boulder's Traditional 2021 Race Canceled, Replaced

Race organizers have come up with a new, safer way to keep the Bolder Boulder tradition alive this year.

BOULDER, CO — For more than four decades, the annual Bolder Boulder race has drawn thousands of runners and wheelchair racers to Colorado, but for a second year in a row, the race — at least in its traditional form — has been canceled.

The race will be replaced with Bolder on the Run 10K, which will be held in staggered time slots over the Memorial Day weekend on popular trails throughout Denver's metro area. Participants can also run virtually.

"The bottom line after talking daily with public health officials, the city of Boulder and the University of Colorado is that safety restrictions and our timeline prevent us from holding the traditional BOLDERBoulder," race organizers said on the Bolder Boulder website.

"However, even though we can’t run in the streets of Boulder or finish in CU Stadium, we are running live and in person over Memorial Day weekend at five locations throughout the front range."

The Bolder on the Run 10K will be held in the following locations:

  • Denver/Littleton: Mary Carter Greenway Trail
  • Firestone: Firestone Trail
  • Broomfield: Interlocken Business Park
  • Loveland: The Ranch, Larimer County's Event Complex
  • Erie: Coal Creek Trail

Medals will be awarded to the top 15 participants in the following categories:

  • Fastest men and women overall for each age (6-75)
  • Best costume overall
  • Best selfie overall
