CU Boulder Moves To Remote Classes For At Least 2 Weeks

BOULDER, CO — The University of Colorado Boulder has announced a temporary move to virtual learning.

Beginning Wednesday, students will move to remote-only instruction, CU Boulder Chancellor Philip DiStefano said in a video message Monday.

"In the immediate interest of our campus and community's health and safety, and after consulting with public health officials, community partners and our own faculty experts, we made a decision to shift to remote learning operations for a minimum of two weeks," DiStefano said.

"At the moment, this is a temporary situation, but it could become permanent if we continue to disregard public health guidelines," he said.

The decision to shift to remote learning comes amid a spike of coronavirus cases at the university.

The virtual learning is expected to last for at least two weeks — through Oct. 7 — the chancellor said.

"During this time, students living in university housing are asked to remain in student housing and comply with local and state health guidance," officials said in a campus guidelines overview.

"Do not leave your halls other than for essential tasks outlined in the county’s stay-at-home/self-quarantine directive."

Residence halls, the student recreation center and campus dining halls will remain open.

Labs, studio and performance classes will be remote, unless approved for an on-campus format by the appropriate college or school dean.

Researchers and research-related activities will not be impacted by the shift to remote learning, officials said.

The university's COVID-19 dashboard, which was last updated Friday, shows 765 cases of the coronavirus since Aug. 24.
