BOULDER, CO -- One of the University of Colorado-Boulder's three student body presidents, political science and Spanish major Jake Reagan has named as a Truman Scholar for 2019. The scholarship, lauded as the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders, provides students with $30,000 to be used toward graduate studies as well as mentorship and extensive leadership training. Just 3,260 students have been given the honor since 1977.

A Boulder native, Reagan advocated against gun violence during his student body presidential campaign. Last November, according to CU Boulder Today, he traveled to Costa Rica to attend a summit hosted by two Nobel Peach Prize laureates, former Costa Rica President Óscar Arias and human rights activist Jody Williams. He has interned in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

“Public service is what I want to dedicate my life to, so the Truman Scholarship is a perfect fit,” Reagan told CU Boulder Today.

“We commend Jake for his leadership in public service,” CU Boulder chancellor Phil DiStefano said. “He exemplifies what it means to lead, innovate and positively impact humanity.”

This is the second consecutive year that a CU student has been named as a Truman Scholar. 2018's honoree, Serene Singh, was also named as a Rhodes scholar last November.
