Facial Reconstruction Complete For Human Remains From Mud Lake

Authorities are seeking the public's assistance for additional information about the human remains found in October 2017.

BOULDER, CO -- New analysis of the skull found near Mud Lake in Nederland on Oct. 2, 2017, has revealed more details about who is may have belonged to, and the Boulder County Sheriff's Office is requesting any additional information members of the public might have about the case.

On Oct. 2, 2017, a hiker discovered partial human remains at the Mud Lake Open Space property in unincorporated Boulder County. On April 26, 2018, a human mandible was found in the same general area the skull was discovered and was confirmed to be part of the same skeletal remains.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, a University of North Texas analysis revealed the skull to belong to a man of mixed European ancestry, between 30-60 years old. A full facial reconstruction was completed by Community Service Officer Beth Buchholtz of the Longmont Police Department.

The DNA profile was entered in the Combined DNA Index System, the FBI’s National DNA Index System, and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. The DNA profile has been tested periodically, but the remains have yet to be identified.
