Labor Day 2020: What's Open, Closed In Boulder
Find out which businesses, institutions and services will be closed on Monday.

BOULDER, CO — All city of Boulder facilities will be closed Friday and most will be closed Monday for Labor Day. Friday's closure is part of a cost-saving effort that was announced in June — this long weekend is among furlough days for nearly all city staff this year in an effort to close the budget gap caused by the pandemic.
Paid city parking is in effect Friday. Parking is free on Labor Day at city pay stations, garages and lots in downtown Boulder, University Hill and Boulder Junction. Paid parking will remain in effect in and around Chautauqua Park on the holiday and use of the free Park-to-Park shuttle is encouraged, the city said.

- Boulder Reservoir: The incoming gate will open at 7 a.m. and the exit gate will close at 8 p.m. Recreation opportunities are limited to "passive recreation" (walking, running, biking), the city said. Water-based activities are not permitted as reservoir drawdown is underway for required maintenance work. While volleyball nets and picnic tables currently are not installed, restroom facilities are available. Passive recreation opportunities are available to visitors to the North Shore or Coot Lake; however, it is illegal to bring any type of watercraft, including stand up paddleboards and flotation devices to the area. Areas signed with “No parking” signage will be enforced, so visitors should not park illegally at risk of being fined or towed. For information, visit Boulder Reservoir.
- Flatirons Golf Course will be open to players with tee times and pre-payment only. The practice facilities and driving range are open only for guests with a tee time. For more information about current protocols, visit Flatirons Golf.
- Spruce Outdoor Pool and Scott Carpenter Pool will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but reservations are required. For more information about current protocols, reservations and hours, visit Spruce Pool and Scott Carpenter Pool.

Labor Day, a federal holiday in the United States, honors the American labor movement. As trade unions grew in the late 19th century, many pushed for a holiday that recognized the groups' achievements.
In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day an official holiday, and over the next seven years, dozens of other states followed suit. In 1894, Labor Day became an official federal holiday, but only for federal workers — it wasn't until several decades later that the day became a statutory holiday for everyone.
