Longmont To Investigate Food Tax Rebates

City council this week directed staff to look into establishing a food tax rebate for qualified low income residents.

LONGMONT, CO -- Longmont city staff will proceed with establishing a program that would refund the municipal sales and use tax charged on food to low income residents. The city council approved continuing the process for implementing the rebates at their meeting this Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Longmont Times-Call reported.

Staff and council generally agreed on Tuesday that the best measure for eligibility would be the criteria used for the Boulder County Low Income Assistance Program. Those guidelines are based upon the number of family members who are below 160 percent of the federal poverty line. According to the Times-Call, the grocery sales tax rebates could be up to $78 a year for each income-qualified individual, plus $78 for each additional family member, with a limit of $204 per family in a given year.

Staff estimated that roughly 600 households would be eligible in 2019.
