BOULDER, CO -- Unused prescriptions left to languish in medicine cabinets can be harmful to both children and those who are vulnerable to addiction or drug abuse. Nationwide, the opioid epidemic has been classified as a public health emergency since 2017, and studies have shown that in many cases, abused prescription drugs are obtained from the home medicine cabinets of family and friends. The Boulder Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency will be hosting a free, public drug take back event on April 27 for those looking to rid their homes of expired or unused prescriptions.

Unwanted prescription drugs can be brought to the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder's office at 1750 33rd Street for safe disposal. The service will be free and anonymous, with no questions asked, and a drive-up option will be available.

The DEA can accept pills and patches, but is unable to take vitamins, supplements, liquids, needles or sharps. Visitors are asked to please remove all pills from their bottles and dump them into a plastic bag to speed the disposal process. The service will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
