Reports Of Fights, Racist Slurs Lead To CU Fraternity Event Ban

Fraternities banned from renting campus spaces in the aftermath of a November football tournament.

BOULDER, CO -- Fraternities at CU have been banned from renting campus spaces for a year after a fall fraternity-hosted football tournament where participants reportedly fought and used racist slurs, according to reporting from the Daily Camera. CU's fraternities have operated independently from the university since 2005, governed by a group known as the Interfraternity Council on the Hill.

The annual "Buff Bowl" football tournament is a charity fundraiser organized by the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. However, at the 2018 edition, fights broke out between participants and spectators at a Nov. 3 game, according to a letter CU officials sent to the fraternity chapter Jan. 14 obtained by the Daily Camera.

Student referees reported feeling physically threatened, and one reported being the object of fraternity members' racist slurs and death threats, according to the Camera. An Intrafraternity Council representative did not deny that such comments were made.
