Broomfield City Council To Debate Controversial Toll Road: Report
The Broomfield City Council weighs $2.5 million grant for Jefferson Parkway, but opponents say road may stir up plutonium from Rocky Flats.
BROOMFIELD, CO — Broomfield residents will have a chance to air their views Tuesday evening about plans for a controversial toll road that would link the city with Golden, according to a media report. The Broomfield City Council is scheduled to discuss funding for the Jefferson Parkway at a 6 p.m. public hearing, TV station CBS4 reported.
The council will consider whether to provide $2.5 million for construction of the toll road, CBS4 reported.
The project is being overseen by the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA), which has representatives from Jefferson County, the city and county of Broomfield and the city of Arvada. The JPPHA board also has two non-voting members, from the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and the Regional Air Quality Council, according to the Golden Transcript.

But opponents say that construction of the Jefferson Parkway will pose a public health risk, alleging that it will disturb soil near the former Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant and release plutonium into the air. Plutonium is a radioactive element used in warheads for nuclear missiles.
Neighbors of the future parkway also are concerned about noise pollution and increased traffic in the area, CBS4 reported.
