Broomfield Cop Donates Liver To Boy, Launches Fundraiser

BROOMFIELD, CO — Donating a life-saving organ to a stranger wasn't enough for a Broomfield police officer — she also launched a fundraiser to help her recipient's family.

Carolyn Becker, a six-year veteran with the Broomfield Police Department, signed up last year to donate an organ to a stranger through UCHealth. She was found to be a perfect match for an 11-year-old boy whose liver was failing.

Both surgeries were successful and her donation saved the boy's life. He sent her a thank you letter, explaining that he's healthier and can now excel at school. He said he'll be "forever grateful" to her, and would like to meet her one day in person.

Becker later found out that his family's out-of-pocket cost for the liver transplant was $20,000. She decided to create a GoFundMe page to help the family.

"No parents should have to watch their child’s organs fail," Becker wrote on the page. "No parents should be financially strained because they made the right choice for their child."

More than $1,400 has been raised in two weeks, but Becker hopes to reach $20,000. Visit the GoFundMe page to help the family.
