On May 17, 2021 Patrick Quinn submitted his resignation as Mayor of the City and County of Broomfield, effective May 23, 2021. Quinn had announced last December that he would not be seeking re-election, and is ending his term six months early after he and his wife, Carleen, determined that it was the right choice for their family.

Quinn was first elected Mayor in 2007 and served three terms, leaving office in 2013, and was elected Mayor again in 2019. Over his tenure with Broomfield, Quinn has served with four different City Councils and has expressed that “without hesitation, I am proud of how the City and County of Broomfield has responded to the multitude of challenges thrown our way, not the least of which was COVID-19.” While the majority of Quinn’s second appointment was spent responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, Quinn had a focus on transportation and was an advocate for Broomfield’s fair share of State, RTD and regional transportation dollars.

Dedicating nearly forty years of service to Broomfield, Quinn served on Broomfield’s Open Space and Trails Committee for eight years and the Broomfield Open Space Foundation for 12 years. As a business owner and CPA, Quinn brought a financial background to his time as Mayor, as well as a commitment to family and community values. His passion for his community was clear in his advocacy work, public service and candor about Broomfield. “As all of you know, I love Broomfield and will continue to be its greatest cheerleader. This is a unique place, a place where we chose to raise our five daughters and the place where we will retire,” stated Quinn in his resignation letter.

With the Mayor resigning his seat, what happens next?

Mayor Pro Tem Castriotta will fulfill the Mayor’s duties until a new mayor is appointed. Under the Broomfield Charter, City Council has 30 days to fill the vacancy by a majority vote of the Council. The selected individual will finish out the remainder of Mayor Quinn’s term, ending November 9, 2021. A process for duly qualified individuals to submit letters is available on the Broomfield website.

If a current councilmember is selected as Mayor, then their seat becomes vacant and must be filled by a majority vote of City Council for the remainder of the unexpired term. The subsequent selection process must be conducted within 30 days of that councilmember’s vacancy. If needed, the process for filling for a vacant councilmember seat will also be posted on the Broomfield website.
