Girl Scouts Explore Aviation At Broomfield Airfield

BROOMFIELD, CO – Colorado Girl Scouts learned Saturday that the sky's the limit at a special aviation event at Rocky Mountain Metro Airport in Broomfield with members of the Colorado Ninety-Nines.

Aviators from the international organization of women pilots gave girls a tour around the airport Oct. 13. Girls learned about aircraft design, air traffic control, how airplanes are affected by weather and aviation history. They even got to make and race various paper airplane designs.

About 45 young women got a chance to earn a special "99s Aviation Patch" to help provide "aviation education and inspiration for young girls in our community," organizers from the Colorado chapter of the Ninety-Nines said.

World-circumnavigator and aviatrix Amelia Earhart was the first president of the Ninety-Nines, which was started in 11929 by 99 women pilots. Today the organization has 5,600 members worldwide, and awards scholarships for young women who want to "achieve their aviation dreams."

There are 22,000 girls and 10,000 adults who participate in Girls Scouts of Colorado, the organization said.
