3 Colorado Springs D11 Schools Named 'Centers of Excellence'

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Three Colorado Springs District 11 schools were recognized by the state department of education for exceptional student academic growth among schools with a high percentage of at-risk pupils. The Centers of Excellence Schools award was given to 54 schools in the state with a student population of at least 75-percent at-risk pupils who showed the "longitudinal academic growth" on a state model, the Colorado Department of Education said in a press release.

Colorado Education Commissioner Dr. Katy Anthes honored schools and districts Thursday at an event at the Denver Art Museum.

Colorado Springs District 11 had three schools that received the 2017 award:

• Carver Elementary School
• Edison Elementary School
• Henry Elementary School (also received 2016 award)

"These schools have demonstrated impressive results on the indicator relating to longitudinal academic growth," a statement from the Colorado Dept. of Education said.

Colorado Springs schools also won awards in the following categories:

The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards schools that “exceed” expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth over three years.

• Buena Vista Elementary School
• CIVA Charter Academy

One Colorado Springs school was recognized by the National Blue Ribbon School Program in November, 2017:

• Wildflower Elementary School (Harrison School District 2)
