Update 3/13/21 4:00 p.m.

In response to the winter storm and anticipated conditions this evening, the Red Cross has opened three warming shelters in the following locations:

  • Kilmer Elementary 4285 Walker Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80908
  • St. Peter Catholic Church 55 Jefferson St, Monument, CO 80132
  • Patriot Learning Center 11990 Swingline Rd, Peyton, CO 80831 (actually in Falcon near Woodmen Rd & Hwy 24)

Across the City, snow plows are on full call-out. Be sure to give them room to work. The National Weather Service emphasizes that travel could be very difficult during this storm. If possible, stay indoors and avoid travel. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency ManagementThe City and County are consolidating their Offices of Emergency Management in an effort to optimize staff resources, establish a single point of contact during major incidences and enhance communication both during and after an event. The new office, the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management (PPR-OEM) will support operations during a disaster or emergency in El Paso County and Colorado Springs.Because disaster knows no jurisdictional boundaries, we can most efficiently prepare for an emergency and respond to one by coordinating our efforts on a regional basis. The establishment of the PPR-OEM will allow the county and the city to more effectively coordinate and assist first responders in an emergency as well as preparing the government and the community for a disaster. is closely monitoring weather conditions, and local officials stand ready to respond to impacts resulting from winter weather in and around Colorado Springs. City plows are on full call-out across the city. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect for El Paso County, including Colorado Springs, through midnight Sunday, March 14.

Meteorologists predict the heaviest snow will fall later this morning and early afternoon and let up late this afternoon. Additional snow may occur later tonight through Sunday as winds become northerly and gusty at 20 to 30 mph. Snow accumulation in southern El Paso County will vary greatly. Areas north and west of Colorado Springs could see close to a foot of snow, while areas in the southeast of El Paso County could see less snow.

Avoid travel, if possible

The National Weather Service emphasizes that travel could be very difficult during this weather event. If possible, stay indoors and avoid travel. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Watch for and obey any travel restrictions and stay tuned to local news or NOAA Weather Radio for updates.

Residents should only call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

While roads are mainly wet in the City, we are still expecting a winter storm into this afternoon and evening. If you have to travel this evening, plan for snowy conditions and travel delays. Highest snow volume is expected late Saturday into Sunday. If you can stay home, please do.
