The Schimberg Group, based in Sarasota, Florida, recently completed the renovation of a classic modern residence in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Built in 1967, the Modernist home was lived in by the architect who designed it. The new owner of the home, Lisa Walsh, said, “My uncle, Dewey Dearing Jr., designed the home 50 years ago for his wife and him. I have loved the house since I was a kid, and the generations following have loved it as well. As my uncle turned 90, my husband and I knew we had to preserve this special place and purchased it.” She continued, “My uncle was still alive and eager to ‘help’ with the renovation project.”

According to architect Barron Schimberg, “The challenge, in concept, may have seemed very simple. We were asked, first, to respect the original designer/architect and honor the original owner, which were the same person. Second, the new owners envisioned a welcoming family retreat with current conveniences within the original modern design context. We had the honor of meeting Mr. Dearing prior to and during the renovation. His stamp of approval, at the completion, was our ultimate success.”
Patty Schimberg was the project’s interior designer. Walsh said, “Patty introduced us to mid-century modern furniture and helped us select the perfect cabinets, tile, wood flooring and appliances, beautifully blending the old with the new.”

The renovation, which included the entire house main house and the exteriors of two buildings, took over a year to complete.
Walsh concluded, “Barron miraculously managed to respect the original vision of my uncle and preserved the great architectural details, but yet transformed the house to one that worked for a modern family. At the end of the project, my uncle proclaimed it a ‘marvel,’ and we couldn’t agree more. The Schimbergs have made it possible for us to continue this legacy.”
Walsh and her husband Matt had previous experience with the Schimberg Group. In 2004, Schimberg designed the offices for the Walsh’s newspaper publishing company, Observer Media Group. In 2010, the Walshes moved the company headquarters into a historic building in downtown Sarasota to accommodate their expanding multimedia company and called upon Schimberg again to design and manage the renovation project, which also blended old and new in a creative yet efficient way. In 2011, Schimberg renovated their Florida home’s standard façade into a contemporary exterior.
