Once upon a time, back in the day, however you want to put it, things
were different than today on so many levels. Today, there is a focus on
teaching kindness, compassion and to be warm-hearted.
I attribute this to the times. Parenting styles have changed along with
society. Still, teaching a child to be kind is important and goes along
with the NO BULLYING that we see and hear so much about today. Our book
Let’s Be Kind starring Warm-Hearted Walrus is a great way to discuss kindness, compassion and to be wearm-hearted.
In life, when you know there is an issue, you want to find the
solution, right? Here at Characters of Character we believe that
teaching a child at a young age is important so that they learn and grow
into who they are and make good choices. We offer an engaging Bulletin Board and Poster Book as well as a Warm-Hearted Walrus Resource Book.

One nice activity that Warm-Hearted Walrus helped with was to help a
classroom collect food for a Food Pantry. This taught the children about
giving as well as the fact that there are people who need help from
others. Some children have no idea that there are other children in the
world who need food, need water, need shelter and need clothes. It’s a
reality in today’s world and teaching our children to be compassionate
and kind will not only lead them towards helping others less fortunate,
but, this trait will help them in daily life to build friendships, and to be confident that they are making good choices in their life.
In our Resource book you’ll find more ideas like this to engage
children into activities at home, at school and in the community which
will help build good character and that being kind to others is a
simple task indeed.
Keep in mind that a child bullies another child for a reason. I found this website to be helpful and you might, too. http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/no-bullying.html
I’m a big advocate for writing, the old
fashioned way, pen and paper. I always told our kids to keep a journal,
if there was something that they were not comfortable telling me or
anyone else about, I encouraged them to write it down on paper, this
helps you think about a situation, address your feelings and also
helped to resolve a situation of concern. It’s a great way to start. In
our Warm-Hearted Walrus Resource Book, we offer a lot of ideas and writing activities. You can build a journal with these questions:
- Name one person you think is kind.
- What makes that person kind?
- Are you kind?
- What makes you kind?
- Name an act of kindness you recently performed.
- How did that make you feel?
- How do you think it made the other person feel?
- What do you think it means to be a bully?
- Have you ever seen another person being bullied?
- How did you handle it?
These are just a few ideas to prompt a discussion and to write a
story about being warm-hearted. Use words like kindness, compassion,
caring and even respectful to describe what it means to be warm-hearted.
Vocabulary is important in a children’s language. Because I’m far from
being certified to give advice on what to do if your child is a bully,
or being bullied, I suggest you read articles, talk with a teacher and
even other parents. Remember that you or your child is never alone in
any given situation.
Her are some other ideas in our Resource Book using pen and paper and
a discussion. Keep in mind when you discuss and model topics with your
children they most likely understand them better and are more apt to
display these qualities you desire to find in them.
Dealing With A Bully:
Bullies become the way that they are because they are unhappy with
themselves. Sometimes bullies become the way that they are because they
think that they will fit in and it will make others like them. Sometimes
bullies become the way that they are because they like attention, and
go about it in the wrong way.
What do you think makes someone become a bully?
What are some ways you could deal with bullies, aside from walking away?
Have you ever been bullied?
I do know that communication is important, don’t make your child feel
afraid to talk with you, you’ll need to be aware of your own children’s
behaviors and
explain to them what you would like to see from them. As discussed in
previous blogs, it’s important to find a way that your child is
comfortable with in communicating to you or to others. Through art,
writing, music, dance, sports, there is always some form that can be
embraced to help a child be comfortable to grow and learn.
What is the old cliché’, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin,
These my friends, are words to live by.
