The cold weather and recent snow isn't exactly inspiring families to plan trips to the local lakes or pools. However, a local swim school is encouraging parents to enroll kids in swim lessons during the winter months.

British Swim School, with several locations in the Denver area, has launched the "Winter Water Warning" education program which details the many dangers of water year-round, while motivating parents to start water safety training now.

"Our program is available year-round because learning water survival skills and proper swimming techniques takes time," said Nikki Taylor owner and CEO of British Swim School Flatirons. "There are bodies of water everywhere, especially in Colorado, from reservoirs, and lakes, to rivers, and streams."

Experts from British Swim School detail how two thirds of all drownings actually happen during "non-swim" times. These are the times when parents do not expect their kids to be around water. For example, during a holiday family gathering when children are playing in a neighborhood that may include a stream or small pond. Kids who don't know how to swim can drown quickly if they accidentally fall into a body of water. Children who have had proper training have a much better chance of survival.

"We teach survival skills before stroke techniques, so every swimmer is prepared to survive an accidental fall into the water," said Taylor. "Water survival is a unique skill set and knowing how to survive means less worry as a parent."

British Swim School welcomes students during every month of the year. They want to ensure parents understand this should not be just a summer activity. If you are interested in signing your child up for lessons, visit https://britishswimschool.com/flatirons/.
