GOLDEN, CO – Golden Police reported that Weld County sheriff's deputies arrested a man accused of breaking into a Golden home and assaulting and robbing the suspects.

Police reported that Saturday morning Drevon Simmons, 24, was seen walking on the south side of I-76 near the town of Roggen with gas cans in his hands. He was approaching a F-250 pickup truck that had been reported stolen out of Golden.

Deputies stopped Simmons, who reportedly "fled from deputies with a knife in his hands. Deputies requested the subject to drop the knife and he refused to comply," a statement from Golden Police said. Simmons eventually surrendered and was arrested.

Police had been searching for Simmons since around 10 p.m. Thursday May 9, when residents in the 800 block of 9th Street called police after an unknown man entered their home through an unlocked side door. The residents said the man confronted them with a baseball bat and a kitchen knife and demanded money.

Police identified the man as Simmons, who had been identified by officers during the day Thursday in downtown Golden for "bizarre behavior," although cops said he had not committed any crime.

Police said when Simmons was in the Golden home he reportedly "took a butcher knife from the victim’s kitchen and had a small baseball bat in his other hand." The male resident suffered minor injures when Simmons allegedly hit him with the bat in the head, arm and wrist. The female resident was able to flee from the home unharmed, police said.

Simmons fled the house, leaving the knife and some of his clothing behind. He fled down an alley behind Coors Credit Union, police said.

Code Red alerts went out to nearby residents to lock their doors and call if they saw Simmons. Golden Police, with assistance from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Lakewood Police K-9 unit, searched the area. The K-9 track led them to 7th and Cheyenne, where they believe Simmons jumped the fence onto Highway 58, police said.

Weld County deputies said Simmons had found the truck nearby in Golden unlocked with the keys in the ignition.

He is being held in the Weld County Jail. Charges from Golden Police include attempted robbery, first-degree burglary, as well as assault, menacing and trespassing charges, the Golden police said. Weld County is also filing multiple charges against Simmons.
