VAIL, CO -- A semi transporting industrial acid went off the road on westbound I-70 Friday morning, causing a hazmat spill and closing the highway westbound for hours. The semi crashed near mile marker 183 east of Vail.
Hazmat cleanup crews from the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Transportation and Vail Fire Department worked to clean up the acid leaked on the road, which was "strong enough to burn metal and boil water" according to the CSP.
Hazmat-trained officers cleaned up the spill and then had to unload the remaining cargo from the semi.
