Released JeffCo Inmates To Receive Anti-Opioid Drug: Sheriff

Those released from custody are eligible to receive continued treatment with opioid-neutralizing drugs.

GOLDEN, CO -- The Jefferson Coounty Sheriff's office announced that the private health company that provides medical and psychiatric health services in the jail will now conduct a followup treatment program with opioid-cancelling drugs for qualifying inmates who have "completed withdrawal protocols." The program will start immediately the sheriff's office said.

"Upon their imminent release from jail, eligible inmates can participate in a voluntary medication assisted treatment (MAT) program to obtain Vivitrol, a non-addictive, long-acting blocking medication that helps reduce opioid cravings and prevent relapses," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Almost 75 percent of JeffCo inmates have a drug-abuse problem, Sheriff Jeff Shrader said. The idea is to followup with released inmates, matching them to doctors who will continue the protocol. Shrader said he hoped to end the trend of addicted inmates ending up in jail again.

The newly established behavioral health unit (BHU) at the jail provides a 30-day detox treatment and support program for eligible inmates with substance addictions. Following up with blocking medication may keep inmates from the revolving door.

"The BHU is designed to reduce recidivism by providing inmates who volunteer for this special housing opportunity with the necessary programs, trainings, and resources to deter bad behaviors and stay healthy once they leave the facility," a statement said.
