Single-Track Sidewalks Mountain Bike Proposal Seeks Input

Should Golden create a network of natural trails next to existing paved bike and walking trails for mountain biking? Have your say Aug. 28

GOLDEN, CO – The City of Golden seeks public input on a proposal to build a network of six natural bike paths next to existing paved paths for beginning (or experienced) mountain bikers.

"Single-track sidewalks" have been created in other mountain towns, such as Eagle, Colorado, where parents and kids designed a network of mountain-bike trails now used by children to ride back and forth from school.

"Getting kids to bike instead of ride in the car, you get handlebar time instead of screen time, and that’s a good thing,” Dan Grunig, executive director of Bicycle Colorado said in an article about the Eagle single-track system.

Non-profit Golden GiddyUp has been proposing the trails since 2011, but has now updated a proposal that would stretch from Apex Park to 6th Avenue along the bike path on city property.

A public meeting with a presentation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Shelton Elementary School, 420 Crawford Street.

Golden is becoming a national epicenter for mountain biking, with the relocated headquarters of Commencal, an international high-end French bicycle company and a new 25-acre "outdoor lifestyle campus" planned with with anchor tenant Yeti Cycles. Additionally, JeffCo Open Space is experimenting with mountain-bike only trails in White Ranch and Matthews/Winters Parks.

The city will collect comments in advance through the www.guidinggolden.com website, where you can see maps of the proposed trails.
