Explore Roxborough State Park In October With Free Hikes And Tour

Bike rides, hikes of all difficulties and a tour of historic Persse Place home celebrate autumn in the beautiful park.

From CO Parks & Rec: Come join the fun, learn about nature and watch Roxborough State Park change with the seasons. Park naturalists will lead you on a journey of discovery through our guided hikes and activities.Programs, sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, are free; however, please remember that all vehicles entering the park must purchase a $7 daily pass or display a valid annual pass. Please note: most programs require reservations. For information about reservations call the park at (303) 973-3959.

October 6: Hike With A Naturalist – Silver Seniors South Rim For Women, 9 a.m. Join Naturalist Deb Wright for a hike on South Rim trail. See beautiful views of Roxborough’s landscape. This moderate 3-mile round trip hike will lift you physically, mentally, and spiritually. Dress for the weather. Bring water and a snack. Reservations via Eventbrite are required. Meet at the visitor center.

October 7: Historic Persse Place Open House, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.Hike the Fountain Valley Trail to this nationally registered historic home. Join Naturalists on-site to learn about the people who lived here in the early 1900’s. Reservations via Eventbrite are required. Meet at the visitor center.

October 14: Rox-Talk, 9 a.m. – NoonJoin Naturalist Mary Taylor near the fireplace or on the patio for an informational conversation about what the rocks tell us about their origins and the environments in which they formed. Reservations via Eventbrite are required.

October 19: Rox-Ride, 10 a.m.Take a naturalist guided tour in a five-passenger golf cart around the Fountain Valley trail. Reservations via Eventbrite are required, donations are requested. Meet at the visitor center.

October 20: International Archaeology Day, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.Join us in celebrating International Archaeology Day by attending a free expo to learn, explore, and experience archaeology first hand. Meet professional and avocational archaeologists from around the state as they demonstrate, discuss and bring to life the cultures of the past. The expo will start at Roxborough Intermediate School, 7370 Village Circle East, Littleton, Co. 80125, which includes information and directions to off-site activities. Food trucks will be on site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will take place such as tool manufacturing, hands on pottery, artifacts, food processing, face painting and many more. Lecture series for the event include:9 a.m. – Jack Warner: Ancient People of the Hogback and Foothills;10:30 a.m. – Kevin Gilmore: A Short Prehistory of the Palmer Divide;Noon – Neil Hausser: The Blackfoot Cave Dig in SE Douglas County;1:30 p.m. – Douglas Bamforth: Mahffy Clovis Cache of Boulder.Sign up for these lectures via Eventbrite. Roxborough State Park Site Visit includes: Archaeological artifacts from the park, pelts of animals used as food by the Archaic and Woodlands inhabitants, and mammoth bones. There will also be a presentation with a hike at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. Reservations on Eventbrite are required for the “Walk & Talk” presentation and hikes.

October 21: Guided Bird Walks, 8:30 a.m.Join Naturalist Jill Holden and grab your bird book and binoculars. These hikes are for all ability levels. Dress accordingly with the weather. Reservations via Eventbrite are required. Meet at the visitor center.

October 24: LAST Moonlight Hike of the Season – Friends Sponsored Program, 6 p.m.Join Naturalists for an evening hike. Afterwards enjoy the evening sky by telescope on the patio. A donation of $5 per hiker is requested. No children under 8 years old and all others accompanied by an adult. To reserve, send a check payable to the “Friends of Roxborough”.

October 27: Roxy Puppet Theater, 10:30 a.m.Join the Roxy Puppet player for fun, wild, and wacky tales of Roxborough wildlife. Reservations via Eventbrite are required 24 hrs. prior to event. Meet at the visitor center.

October 27: Homestead Hike, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.Join Naturalists Mike Thomas, John & Betsy Healey and other Naturalists for a day full of history and great views. After a presentation, the hike is 6 hours, 7 miles, and includes 6 homesteads. There will be turn around points to make for a shorter hike. Bring water, lunch, and appropriate gear. Reservations via Eventbrite are required. Meet at the visitor center.
