Man Arrested In 1981 Cherry Hills Village Homicide Case

Nearly four decades after Sylvia Quayle was killed in her home, new genetic research linked her case to a suspect.

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, CO — A man was arrested in a 1981 homicide case in Cherry Hills Village, authorities said Thursday.

Sylvia Quayle was 35 when she was sexually assaulted, stabbed and shot in her home, police said. Her father found her body Aug. 4, 1981.

David Dwayne Anderson, 62, was arrested Feb. 10 in Nebraska, police said. He faces two counts of first-degree murder.

Anderson is being held in custody in Nebraska and will be sent to Colorado. His extradition date has not been announced.

Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and the Cherry Hills Village Police Department worked with United Data Connect to conduct DNA tests from the case. Investigators were able to narrow down the results through public records, newspapers and other documents, the agencies said.

"I am proud to be able to tell Sylvia's sister and brother-in-law that the men and women of our department have anticipated the opportunity to make this announcement for almost 40 years," said Michelle Tovrea, Cherry Hills Village police chief. "My thoughts are with the family. We can only try to understand the deep pain and sense of loss you have experienced. I am pleased there is a path moving forward to seek justice in her death."
