Avon native and Mrs. Porter’s School graduate Morgan Clifford started designing in the fashion industry about eight months ago and already has had her designs worn on the red carpet.

Clifford graduated from Mrs. Porter’s School in 2004 and went on to study psychology at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She graduated in 2008 and moved to New York City where she worked at Alice and Olivia and Calypso St. Barth as a buyer.

“I started sketching coats and then I realized I should try and have one made,” she said.

An employee at Alice and Olivia helped her get her samples made.

Clifford designed an olive crop top and mini skirt that True Blood star Bailey Noble wore at the BAFTA/LA pre-Emmy Tea Party. Clifford got in touch with Noble’s manager and stylist and overnighted three samples to Los Angeles. She didn’t hear back, but was excited to see one of her designs was worn on the red carpet.

Ali Simpson, the sister of young star Cody Simpson recently wore a coat that Clifford designed. She Instagrammed a photo to her more 1.6 million fans.

She will also have one of her designs shown in a Seventeen magazine photoshoot.

Morgan said she designs mostly for the young Hollywood scene. Her favorite type of clothing to design are coats. She found an email from 2008 where she asked her dad for money to start a clothing line. He said she should establish herself first in a big city like New York. Clifford took his advice.

“They’ve known for such a long time that i wanted to make coats,” she said about her parents, John and Aelish Clifford, adding that they have been supportive of her new career.

She is drawn to coats because there are many low-priced and couture coats, but not as many cool designs in a mid-priced, but affordable range.

Upcoming singer Kerri Medders wore a Clifford pink crop top for her upcoming release “Back to the Start” photo shoot.

Over the next couple of years the plan is to keep growing her clothing line and eventually sell it to consumers.

“My vision is elegant but useful and contemporary, in the $300 to $500 range,” she said.
