Avon Residents Evacuated Following Gas Leak

Residents evacuated after a motor vehicle hit a natural gas line Thursday afternoon.

AVON, CT — Residents of an Avon neighborhood evacuated Thursday afternoon when a motor vehicle accident resulted in an active gas leak. According to police, officers responded to the call at 5 Pond Place at 1:09 p.m.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a motor vehicle had partially driven into a standalone housing unit, which was vacant at the time of the accident.

Officers assisted the elderly driver and provided medical attention. The driver was transported to John Dempsey Hospital with minor injuries.

Officers also determined the natural gas line entering the home had been broken, creating an active gas leak. The immediate area was evacuated by Avon police and firefighters.

Eversource and Connecticut Natural Gas responded to the scene, turning off electricity and gas service to the home.

Repairs to the gas line are currently underway and are expected to be completed by approximately 6:30-7:00 p.m.

Area residents were allowed to return to their homes with no reports of injuries or illness resulting from the gas leak, police said.
