Happy Feet; King's Speech Camp; Sunshine; and Other Avon Happenings

Here's what's happening in Avon this week.

Happy Monday, Avon!

I know, it's Monday and that means the weekend is over and the work week resumes. Garfield had it right sometimes with his signature "I hate Mondays" catchphrase.

But you know what else Monday means? A new beginning. Every week! It's like the New Year's Day of week days.

I raise my glass of orange juice to you and wish you a positive case of the Mondays that will make you as happy as Garfield is when he eats lasagna.

Here are some highlights of what you have to look forward to this week:

Meetings: The Town Council meeting scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8 is canceled, so let's hear it for a night off for your hard working town officials. But the Avon Clean Energy Commission will meet Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Avon Room in the basement of Town Hall, building 1, and the Avon Water Pollution Control Authority is scheduled to meet on Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Selectmen's Chamber within the same building at 60 West Main Street.

Happy Feet!: Dancing penguins are great (a great movie to put you in a happy mood, for sure) and so are healthy feet. Dr. Lindsay will be at the Avon Senior Center at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 to answer your questions about foot care, take a look at your feet, clip toenails and remove calluses, according to the town website. It costs $40 and you can call 860-677-7272  to make an appointment.

The King's Speech: The Academy Award-winning film was excellent and inspirational. Speech therapist Judith Rosenfield, owner of the King's Speech and Learning Center in Weatogue, also hopes to help by offering a summer camp that teaches kids from 4 to 17 social skills and builds their confidence. King's Speech Summer Drama Camp starts Aug. 5, according to an announcement posted on Patch. Click here to read more about it.

Ready, Set, Cook!: Chefs in your community will pair with local celebrities like WFSB's Joe Zone, ESPN's Kevin and former New England Patriots Super Bowl champion Tebucky Jones in culinary competition on Friday, Aug. 9. They'll have to impress the judges, including former basketball pro Rebecca Lobo, in this fundraiser event for Gifts of Love. Come join in on the fun at the Community Farm of Simsbury at 73 Wolcott Rd. Tickets are $50. Click the link provided for more information.

Morning, Sunshine!:  That's right! You're in for a sunny Monday and slightly cooler weather. Temperatures will likely be in the high 70s, according to the National Weather Service. Sun and 80-degree temperatures are in the forecast for Tuesday. Click here for this week's weather forecast.

Maybe Monday isn't so bad after all, Garfield.

That's not all that's going on. Take a look at our calendar and Boards. Don't see your event mentioned? Please add it!
