'Moments in Avon's History' Exhibit on Tap for July

From Avon Historical Society: The Avon Historical Society, in partnership with the Avon Free Public Library, announces the opening of an exhibit on Friday, July 7 entitled “Moments in Avon’s History.” It will be centered outside the Marian Hunter Local History Room and extend throughout the Library. It will remain open through August.

The exhibit will feature 12 colorful and educational portable banners, seven feet in height, each telling a different aspect of Avon’s history, with historic and current photos, covering topics such as early education, agriculture, religion, and transportation. These portable banners is to bring history “on the road” to town offices, businesses, schools and retail shops on a rotating basis to pique the interest of the general public about the town’s rich heritage and history.

Exhibits and More of Liverpool, NY, a professional graphic arts firm, donated the design of each banner using specifications from the National Park Service. Research and writing of the text was done by members of the Avon Historical Society and the Avon Town Historian. CT Humanities provided a grant for the production of the banners. “It was a true collaboration of skill, knowledge and expertise that made this project happen,” stated Terri Wilson, President, Avon Historical Society.

The banners will be unveiled at a public opening on Saturday, July 29 at 11:00am in Alsop Community Room of the Avon Free Public Library. They will remain on display through August outside the Marion Hunter Local History Room and around the Library, and then appear around town beginning in September. Anyone interested in having one or more of these banners in their entrance ways, foyers, atriums, etc., beginning in the Fall, please leave a message for the Avon Historical Society at 860-678-7621. It is anticipated they will rotate every two months.

In addition, several of the banners will be on display in the Avon Historical Society’s booth at Celebrate Avon on Saturday, September 23rd for the public to view up close.

The grant proposal from CT Humanities was written by Avon Historical Society member Norm Sondheimer who commented, “Avon is rich in history. We are delighted to be able to show it off.” In addition, Avon Town Historian Nora Howard said, “the Society and the Library have created a superb project to bring more Avon history out in to the open – where it belongs. History will be popping up in unexpected places, and that’s a wonderful thing.”
