New Business Cakes By Wildflour Debuts In Avon
The next cake decorating class will take place on June 18 and participants will practice making dog faces in cupcakes.
From Cakes by Wildflour: A new business debuted in Avon on Mother’s Day that had people smiling, laughing, biting their lips in deep concentration, and ultimately oohing and ahhing at their cupcake decorations. Bonnie Samberg, who for many years was known as one of the most creative cake artists in the region, is now teaching others how to do what the pros do — but with much less drama and a lot more fun. Her new cake and cupcake decorating classes, Cake Classes by Wildflour, held at the elegant Connecticut Kitchen & Bath Studio on Route 44 in Avon, got off to a rousing start earlier this month. Six adult students signed up for the first class — four friends from different Connecticut towns, and two men from New York City — who had no idea just how much fun they’d have before they started, and how beautiful their work would turn out. In addition to scheduled classes, Bonnie will also hold specially-arranged private lessons for up to six participants at a time. One was held last weekend on drip cakes, with three friends who oohed and ahhed just as loudly as those who did so on Mother's Day!
“I learned, I laughed, I loved!” commented Kate Buffone of Milford.
“I didn’t think I’d be good at this. But I had the right tools and the right instructor to become really good at it!” said Erin Gallagher of Naugatuck.

“Look! I have great ruffle action going on here!” enthused Roxie Quinn of Torrington. Bonnie’s former custom cake business, Cakes by Wildflour, was extremely successful in New Jersey.
After relocating to Connecticut, she decided to blend her artistic and confectionary talents with her love of helping people learn new skills. Cake Classes by Wildflour at the ConnecticutKitchen & Bath Studio is the intriguing result of that mix. “John Yates, who founded and runs Connecticut Kitchen & Bath Studio, has one of the most stylish working kitchen display rooms in New England, and I can’t think of a classier place to host students and work with them on designs that are just as stylish,” says Bonnie. “I’m so pleased to be able to hold my classes there. It’s a great place to try to reach my goal, which is to inspire other cake and cupcake enthusiasts to trust their imaginations and translate their ideas into charming, elegant and delicious creations.” In the debut class, students learned how to create a realistic buttercream bouquet of assorted flowers using a piping bag, and replicated wild roses, buttercups, and flat rosettes, and each took home a box with six their creations. Scheduled classes will be held on select Sundays, with two sessions per day to choose from.

Although there have been many cake-related reality shows on television over the last decade, Bonnie says that what most novices do not realize is that reality has little to do with them. Decorating cakes and cupcakes the proper way takes patience, confidence, and an affinity more for simplicity than complexity, which runs counter to what many of the TV shows promote. In many ways, Cake Classes by Wildflour is the effective antidote to reality TV. Class sizes are limited and advanced registration and payment are required.
