AVON, CT — An oil truck carrying 3,000 gallons of fuel crashed at the intersection of Nod Road and East Main Street, at the base of Avon Mountain, Wednesday afternoon in Avon, according to officials.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to manage the spillage resulting from the crash. Avon Mountain Road (Route 44) was closed for several hours for investigation and cleanup of the spill.

DEEP officials said the truck lost its load of 3,000 gallons of heating oil that ran down the street and into nearby catch basins that flow into wetlands and Nod Brook.

The owner of the truck accepted responsibility and Environmental Services, Inc., was contracted to help with the cleanup, according to officials.

DEEP officials reported that the oil was contained just before the pond at a nearby golf course. Booms are in place to contain the oil before it gets to the pond, which is a spillway into the Farmington River, according to officials.
