Volunteer Firefighter Dies In Tragic Avon Crash

A Burlington volunteer firefighter died in a wreck last week.

AVON, CT — The local community and beyond is mourning the death a long-time volunteer firefighter and EMT who was killed in a rollover crash on Friday night. The accident occurred on Waterville Road, Route 10, in Avon Friday night, according to police. Steven Oullette, of Bristol, was 41 years old.

"The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department sends our Condolences to the Family," the department wrote on Facebook. "Steven was a firefighter and EMT in our department and worked for Bristol EMS. He was a friend to many. Rest Easy, We will Take it From Here."

Oullette was a lieutenant in the fire department and worked at Bristol Hospital for 18 years. He always "enjoyed helping other people," according to his obituary.

Police said they received a call regarding an accident at 7:23 p.m. A 2002 black Dodge Durango was found upside down when emergency responders arrived.

The vehicle had gone over the guardrail and down a steep embankment, stopped by the thick brush at the wood line, according to police.

The truck was unoccupied and the driver, Oullette, was located in the woods. The victim was unresponsive with severe trauma to his head and upper body. He was transferred to UConn Medical Center where was pronounced dead at 8:29 p.m.

A memorial service for Oullette will be held on Saturday, July 13, at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave, Bristol at 11 a.m.

Oullette was a state of Connecticut fire instructor and a member of the dive team, according to his obituary. He was born in New Britain in 1978 and was employed by Ensign Bickford in Simsbury for over 18 years.

"Steve enjoyed the camaraderie of sports in his youth, pitching for his baseball team and playing lineman for the Bristol Eastern football team," his obituary reads. "Steve earned the nickname 'MEATBALL' which he treasured and carried with him wherever he went."
