Crews Tackle Garbage Fire at Meckauer Park In Bethel

The driver of a garbage truck dumped the flaming refuse into a parking lot after it caught fire within the truck.

BETHEL, CT — The trash inside a garbage truck caught fire Thursday morning, prompting the driver to dump the flaming refuse into the parking lot at Meckauer Park.

Firefighters from Stony Hill Volunteer Company were called in shortly before 8 a.m., and doused the pile of burning garbage.

The Bethel Public Works department dispatched a backhoe to help open up the pile, and the firefighters could fully extinguish it. The carting company brought in equipment and personnel to clean up the trash.
