The Drowsy Chaperone is a parody of American musical comedies of the 1920s that revolves around a middle-aged, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic and a recording of his favorite musical. As he listens, the “show-within-a-show” comes to life, transforming his dingy apartment into an impressive Broadway set. Watching from his armchair, he is torn between his desire to absorb every moment of the show and his need to provide running commentary, frequently bringing the audience in and out of the fantasy. He reveals aspects of his personal life through his musings about the show, until, as the record ends, he is left alone again in his apartment.
