Cheshire BOE Approves Full-Day Kindergarten

Next year's proposed budget will include funding for the full-day program for kindergarteners after Thursday's unanimous vote.

After months of debate, the Cheshire Board of Education on Thursday made the commitment to a full-day kindergarten program.

The board voted unanimously to include the funding in next year's budget request. It's estimated that it will cost about $700,000 to pay for the program for all of the town's kindergarteners.

The board created a Cheshire Full Day Kindergarten Feasibility Task Force to investigate the possibility of instituting a full-day program. In October, that task force reported back favorably to the board's Circulumn Committee, which in turn recommended to the full board that the initiative be funded.

The proposal also became a campaign issue, with the candidates for both the Town Council and the Board of Education grilled on their views during candidate forums before the Nov. 5 election.

With the school board agreeing to include it in its upcoming proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year, it will then be up to the Town Council, which has final approval of the budget.
