Cheshire Extends Local Tax Deferral Program

The local property tax deferment program was extended through Gov. Ned Lamont's executive order.

CHESHIRE, CT — Cheshire is extending the local property tax deferment program through Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order, officials announced Monday.

The program was previously approved by the Cheshire Town Council for taxes due July 1 and has been extended under Lamont’s recent executive order. Therefore, any real property, supplemental motor vehicle and sewer use bills that are due on Jan. 1, 2021 can be paid up until April 1, 2021 and will not be considered delinquent and will not incur interest, according to officials.

“Aforementioned bills paid on April 2, 2021 or later shall be delinquent and interest shall be charged at the statutory rate of 1.5 percent per month or 6 percent retroactive to Jan. 1, 2021,” officials wrote in a news release. “This deferral program is established to provide additional relief on interest and penalties for Cheshire taxpayers who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
