Cheshire Obituaries: Brian K. Liburd, 47

The Cheshire High School graduate died Saturday at Hartford Hospital following surgery to remove a brain tumor.

Brian K. Liburd, 47, of West Hartford, the beloved husband to Cindy (Hawk) Liburd and loving father to son Trey and daughter Riley, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Hartford Hospital following surgery to remove a brain tumor.

Born in New Haven, son of Gordon and Judy (Pierce) Liburd of Cheshire, he attended Foote School in New Haven and graduated from Cheshire High School, where he was a varsity basketball player.

Brian attended the University of Connecticut, where he became known as “DJ Bird” on the campus radio station, graduated with a communications degree, and set off on an incredible 25 year career in television sports. He met his wife while working at WFSB-TV and along the way welcomed two beautiful children while traveling the country producing all kinds of sports stories for ESPN, CBS Sports, ABC Sports and Turner Sports.

He especially loved to focus attention on the “real person” behind the “star athlete”, and highlighting young athletes on the rise. He most recently worked as a feature producer and social media guru at E:60 on ESPN.

His sense of humor, intelligence, confidence, and grasp of reality endeared him to those who knew him. Brian cherished his children and always urged them to follow their dreams.

Besides his heartbroken wife, children and parents, Brian is survived by his sister Traci Oh and her husband Jeffrey and their three children Logan, Morgan and Campbell of Southport, CT; his aunts Loretta Troxler, Louise Pierce, Debbie Reece of New Haven, and Sondra Jordan and her husband Ronald of Columbia, MD; his uncle Stephen Liburd of Hamden; Cindy's parents David and Janice Hawk of Lafayette, CO; many cousins and countless friends.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 4-7 p.m. at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home,136 South Main St. West Hartford. Burial will be private.
