What's Closed and Open on Labor Day in Cheshire

A long weekend is upon us, here's what's open and closed for the holiday.

Labor Day took root following the strike against Illinois railroad manufacturers in the 1890s. Monday is a day off for employees of all industries, so here's what's closed on Monday:

  • All Cheshire municipal offices and library
  • All Cheshire public schools
  • All federal and state offices
  • U.S. financial markets
  • Banks and credit unions ( is open in Cheshire)
  • All postal offices
  • Commuter trains such as Shore Line East and Metro North will run on a holiday/weekend schedule Monday
  • The DMV open today (Friday) from 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then closed until Tuesday at 7:45 a.m.

Here's what open on Sept. 3, Labor Day:

  • Retail Stores
  • Supermarkets
  • Restaurants
  • Convenience stores
  • Bars/Taverns
  • Package stores (for the first time this year)
