No Cheshire Bulk Trash Pickup This Year — Maybe Spring?

It's been five years since there was a bulk trash pickup in Cheshire, and there won't be one this year either.

The Town Council recently rejected the only bid for the work that came in from a request for bids because it was too high — $450,000, compared to the $150,000 the town paid in 2008.

Public Works Director George Noewatne told the council that when he investigated earlier this year how much the pickup cost, the estimates were around $150,000. But, he said, the companies he spoke to didn't bid on the project this time around.

CWPM Waste Removal of Plainville, defended its bid, Noewatne said, as being appropriate for a town the size of Cheshire. The company that did the work five years ago, Ferraro & Sons, is no longer in business, he said.

But the council found CWPM's bid unacceptable and voted to reject it. The issue will now go back to the Solid Waste Committee for review with the goal of bringing it up again for a spring pickup program.

Bulk trash programs are traditionally popular with residents and are common is surrounding towns. In North Haven, a bulk trash pickup was held in September and one is now underway during the month of October in Hamden.
