CHESHIRE, CT — Cheshire High School football coach Don Drust will remain in his position, Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Solan announced Wednesday. Drust’s future with the school was uncertain after recently he met with school district administrators regarding an issue.

While not confirming what the issue was, Solan said the recent situation has concluded.

“There were some concerns brought forward that after an investigation have been resolved,” Solan said in a statement. “I appreciate the fact that the community has stood behind one of our coaches and affirmed what we know of Coach Drust to be a tremendous asset to our students. His character was not in question. We are lucky to have Coach Drust supporting and mentoring our children. We look forward to Coach Drust continuing with our students this fall.”

Around 100 people showed up Monday morning outside the Cheshire Board of Education offices in support of Drust after hearing the popular football coach's job may be in jeopardy, according to multiple reports.

GameTimeCT.com, citing sources, reports the issue was related to a clerical issue involving paperwork believed to be Drust's coaching certification that has since been resolved.

School officials didn’t comment on the issue, saying it was a personnel matter.

In his statement, Solan said that it “should be noted that there are strict laws surrounding the release of personnel matters when in public agencies.”

“These are not meant to stifle information, but to protect all parties involved,” Solan said. “At no time, were Town Councilors apprised of details or consulted with regarding this situation. No Town Councilor had any input in this process. While politicians welcome public feedback and discourse, those who serve their community and especially their family members should never be subjected to personal attacks. It is disturbing to know that personal attacks and even threats have occurred. There is no place for that in our community.”
