On August 7, 1978, Police Officer William Hull was on motor patrol duty. At approximately 1400 hours, he was flagged down by a male in the area of 29 Beaver Brook Road. The male was bleeding heavily from his right arm. At the same time, he saw that the house at the address had flames shooting out from the rear, and saw heavy smoke both inside and outside the house. He notified dispatch and requested the fire department and an ambulance respond. He then rendered first aid to the injured eighteen year old male, who was a resident of the home.
The resident and officer went to the front door of the home an opened it, in an attempt to retrieve a dog, where they were hit with heavy black smoke. The male also told Officer Hull that his van was near the rear of the house where heavy fire was coming from. The officer and resident then ran to the back of the house. With the help of some neighbors they were able to get the vehicle away from the house. Officer Hull ran through the smoke again so he could get back to the front of the house, and meet responding fire and ambulance units.
Officer Hull also attended to the male victim a second time, who continued to bleed heavily, until ambulance personnel were able to take over. When Officer Hull began coughing heavily and felt pressure in his chest, he was given first aid on the scene. He then drove himself to Danbury Hospital where he received additional treatment for smoke inhalation. He was out of work for several days before returning to his regular duties on August 14, 1978. Detective Hull eventually retired on December 1, 1986, due to ongoing health injuries related to this incident.
