Mayor Broughton Honors National Day of Prayer

The ceremony will be held at City Hall on Thursday, May 4 at 11am.

From the Office of the Mayor: Mayor Mark Boughton would like to invite our community and our faith leaders to join him on Thursday, May 4th at 11am at City Hall in recognition of the annual National Day of Prayer.

“We hold our National Day of Prayer ceremony in order to bring together our faith communities and every member of our society,” said Mayor Boughton. “I invite each and every individual, of all religions or otherwise, to join us in prayer honoring the unity of our nation and of our community.”

The National Day of Prayer gathers Americans of all religions and faiths to foster harmony for America. Days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for such a day. Officially, the National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952 and was signed into law by President Truman. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.
