Storms Roll Through Southern Connecticut Knocking Down Trees

The National Weather Service says the area can expect possibly severe weather this evening.

As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, it appears the last of the storm's is exiting the eastern part of the state but not before it resulted in numerous downed trees and power lines. A large tree fell on a house in Middletown.

After the storm moved through a rainbow was spotted.


In a 5:45 p.m. update, the National Weather Service says a line of strong thunderstorms will affect New London, New Haven and Middlesex counties. Strong storms rolled through much of the southern part of the state beginning around 4:30 p.m. It appears as we move to 6 p.m. the worst of the storms is moving eastward.

"At 544 PM EDT, radar indicated strong thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Plainfield to near Branford. Movement was east at 45 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Jewett City, New Haven, Milford, Norwich, New London, Guilford, Colchester, Clinton, East Hampton, Groton, Old Saybrook, Durham, Salem, Chester and Mystic.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

5 p.m. update SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — The National Weather Service provided an update on the severe weather moving through Southern Connecticut Monday evening. Strong thunderstorms moved into the area beginning after 4:30 p.m. and are continuing into Middlesex and New London counties too.

"At 453 PM EDT, radar indicated strong thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Lake Pocotopaug--East Hampton to Darien. Movement was east at 25 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph and pea size hail are possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Norwalk, Meriden, Milford, Middletown, Wallingford, Shelton, Guilford, Colchester, Clinton, East Hampton, Durham and Salem.

4 p.m. update FAIRFIELD/NEW HAVEN COUNTY — The National Weather Service says a "line of strong thunderstorms" will move into Fairfield and New Haven counties by 4:30 p.m.

"At 416 PM EDT, radar indicated strong thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Monroe to near Mount Kisco. Movement was southeast at 25 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph and pea size hail are possible with these storms."

Locations impacted include...
Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Norwalk, Milford, Shelton, New Canaan, Newtown, Fairfield, Greenwich, Stratford, Trumbull, Westport, Ridgefield and Darien.

"Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service," according to the NWS.
