3 People, 6 Cats Escape Middlefield House Fire

The blaze broke out at a Middlefield home early Saturday morning.

MIDDLEFIELD, CT — Three people and six cats escaped safely after an electrical fire broke out at a Middlefield home, according to FOX 61. A neighbor saw that the home was on fire and was able to warn the family.

Firefighters were dispatched at 2 a.m. Saturday for a fire at a Way Road home. There was an electrical fire on the side of the building that extended to the rest of the home.

Because of the electrical wires and service meter involved, crews were unable to immediately extinguish the fire that extended up the home's exterior. An interior crew was able to use a hose line to the first floor and attic to keep the fire from spreading further, according to the fire department.

Eversource remotely shut down a portion of the electric grid per the fire department's request.

"While this leaves more customers without power, it allowed the burning wires to be de-energized much quicker and allow for extinguishment of the fire, preventing further damage and extension into the attic," the department wrote on Facebook.
