DEEP Hosts Saltwater Fishing Day Saturday

Connecticut’s Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) is sponsoring “Saltwater Fishing Day” this Saturday, August 10th at Fort Trumbull State Park, New London, from 10:00 am until 2:00 p.m. (GPS address: 90 Walbach Street, New London, CT).

“Our Saltwater Fishing Day is a great opportunity to fish for a number of popular marine species, including bluefish, tautog (blackfish), scup (porgy), striped bass and fluke (summer flounder). I encourage anglers to bring their family and friends to this event and introduce them to the sport of saltwater fishing,” said DEEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Whalen. “Long Island Sound is a very special resource and offers many great fishing opportunities.”

There are a number of free activities scheduled to take place at the saltwater fishing festival, including:

  • Fishing and crabbing from the pier, which will be staffed by certified fishing instructors from DEEP’s CARE program.

  • Fish activities and games for youngsters.

  • Fishing instruction.
    Free bait will be provided along with a limited number of fishing poles, but you are encouraged to bring your own.

    The second annual Saltwater Fishing Day is part of DEEP’s No Child Left Inside® initiative focusing on introducing families to the outdoors, building the next generation of environmental stewards and showcasing Connecticut’s State Parks and Forests. It is also a program of DEEP’s and Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) Programs, under which certified instructors pass along information and expertise they’ve gained while angling in local waters.
