Another debate about our most successful democracy will occur on July 30 and 31. This is very important. Voters will soon face an election to choose their leaders. Selection of a candidate is no ordinary thing. In a very real sense, the fates of America and the world depend on it. The stakes in the 2020 election are huge. In the first debate among democratic candidates for President of the U.Ss, it was refreshing to see competent, caring, decent people run for office. Already the 2020 campaign has been elevated from the depths of lying, name-calling, and vindictive dominance.
These debates are part of the process of winnowing aspirants for office. Who are the candidates who can unite the country around an agenda of robust democracy and shared prosperity? While authoritarians promote division and hatred, democrats promote unity, inclusion, and an agenda based on economic, social, racial, and environmental justice.
The successful democratic candidate must also attend to present dangers. This great country does not need a person who keeps children in cages at the border, coddles foreign dictators, shatters alliances with other democracies, uses the presidential office to make money, lies so consistently that lists of lies are kept on the internet, subsidizes fossil fuels, down plays climate change, produces fake news, and undermines democratic institutions and norms.
