Durham to Form Dog Warden Committee, Town Green Task Force

Town officials are looking to address the hiring of new dog warden and improvements to the town green with the help of volunteers.

Volunteers are being recruited to help Durham hire its next dog warden.

On Monday, selectmen agreed to form a search committee that will recommend candidates for the job, as well as possible changes to the position.

The town's longtime dog warden, Bruce Rau, announced his plans to retire last month.

Durham is in a unique position because the town's dog pound is located on Rau's property, on a private road, Francis said. The committee will also consider regional efforts and whether responsibilities can be shared with other towns.

"There are some things to work through," Francis said.

Town Green Task Force

Selectmen also agreed Monday to form a town green task force, a group that will be responsible for developing a long-range plan for the planting, maintenance and removal of trees on the property.

"The goal would be to beautify the green and create a unique sense of pride for generations to come," a letter outlining the proposal said.

Francis said town officials have been reluctant to remove trees from the green due to the lack of a plan.

The task force was recommended by the Durham Garden Club and Durham tree warden, Tim Larkin.
