Here Are The 10 Most Dangerous Roads In Durham And Middlefield

A new report names the worst local roads in town. Did they miss any?

DURHAM/MIDDLEFIELD, CT — Durham’s most dangerous roadway over the past four years is Route 17 with nearly 200 crashes. Middlefield’s most dangerous roadway over the past four years is Route 66 with nearly 160 crashes.

The UConn Connecticut Crash Data Repository has crunched data from The Department of Public Safety and the state Department of Transportation.


These are Durham's most dangerous roads and routes from the past four years:

There were three fatal Durham crashes, 62 with suspected serious injuries and 46 with suspected minor injuries. Overall there were 453 crashes between 2015 and halfway through December 2018.

There were one fatal Middlefield crash, one with suspected serious injuries and 42 with suspected minor injuries. Overall there were 333 crashes between 2015 and halfway through December 2018.

There were more than 431,000 crashes crashes on Connecticut roads and highways between 2015 and Dec. 17, 2018, according to the repository. Of that 1,074 involved fatal injuries.


The top 10 routes for crashes in Connecticut from 2015 to 2018 are:

  • I-95 (21,547)
  • I-84 (17,652)
  • CT-15 (16,620)
  • Rt. 1 (16,577)
  • I-91 (12,724)
  • Rt. 10 (7,063
  • Rt. 8 (5,932)
  • Rt. 6 (5,750)
  • Rt. 44 (5,137)

About three-quarters of all crashes happened during dry conditions.
